03 Jan CREATE YOUR OWN MAGICAL END OF YEAR COMPILATION VIDEO
An End Of Year compilation video is truly something special, it’s one of my absolute favourite projects to dive into! If you’ve captured video moments throughout the year, why not transform that footage into a vibrant highlights reel that encapsulates your experiences?
Sure, creating this video can be a bit time-consuming, especially if you’ve amassed a treasure trove of clips. However, trust me, the end result is incredibly rewarding.
My journey creating these types of videos began back in 2011 when I crafted my very first “End Of Year” compilation. I combined a delightful mix of photos and video clips.
After that initial attempt, I took a break—one year I was in the throes of moving, and other years I felt overwhelmed by the sheer possibilities of what I could create.
Then, in 2015, I decided it was time to take action and simplify my process. I played with the idea of using only one-second clips in the edit, and voilà! The Memory Postcards concept was born.
Since then, I’ve been creating these compilations every year, and they’ve become some of my most cherished videos.
In 2020, I opted for a mini version, capturing the essence of the 100 days we spent in lockdown, rather than the entire year.
I continued the tradition with unique compilations that reflected the spirit of those years.
Then came 2023, where I had challenged myself to create a video every single day. The compilation became quite the undertaking! I pondered how to encapsulate a whole year’s worth of creativity.
Eventually, I completed a video that truly depicted my journey throughout the year.
And guess what? I’m working on my 2024 offering, so stay tuned!
If you’re inspired to create your own End of Year compilation, here are some tips to get you started:
Prepare for the Adventure – Set aside dedicated time to sift through all your clips from the year. This may feel like a daunting task, but it’s worth every second! Create a special folder on your computer or phone to gather all the footage that reflects your journey.
Find the Moments that Make You Feel – Look for memories that evoke emotions—joy, laughter, nostalgia—whatever resonates with you. These are the moments that will make your compilation truly unforgettable!
Choose the Perfect Soundtrack – Music sets the tone for your video! Whether your year was a whirlwind of excitement or a serene retreat, choose tracks that mirror those emotions. The right music will elevate your video and draw viewers into your story.
Include Yourself in the Narrative – Don’t shy away from appearing in your own video! Even if it’s just a quick selfie or a candid shot, including yourself adds a personal touch that makes your story relatable and engaging.
Dive into the Editing Process – Once you’ve rounded up all your footage, it’s time to edit! Grab one-second clips, seamlessly weave them together, and aim for a length of about two/three minutes. Think of your video as a beautiful collage. Allow your instincts to guide you—let the clips flow naturally without overthinking the sequence!
Above All, Have Fun! – Remember, perfection isn’t the goal. The essence of this project is to use footage that might otherwise be forgotten and create something meaningful you can cherish.
