I love the morning routine… That hour or so between waking and the boys going to school. It feels pretty ordinary and much the same each day, as we move through the mundane motions of daily life; like the dishwasher being emptied & cereal being poured. Yet over the years, some things remain and other bits are completely different.

A shift happens… so slowly that I don’t notice it. The school uniforms change, the cats are bigger, the boys hair is different and teeth have grown, but hey, Asterisk books are still being read. If I hadn’t made one of these films last year and the year before that, I might not have really noticed the differences. I might not have taken the time to remember the details of everyday life are always evolving.

The morning routine is still one of my favourite Time Capsule films to make. Deciding which moments are the memories I want to preserve. These films aren’t about being technical perfect or trying to make a “better” film each time. They’re a personal story of our life. They’re just about capturing an ordinary moment in time and packaging it up to remember forever… thus making it extraordinary to me.

This was filmed a few months ago in the Autumn and already, by January, things have changed… and next time I’m shooting one in the summer months! – those dark moments first thing in our basement flat, aren’t the best to capture.

SO, if this has inspired you to create a film about your morning routine… and you’d like to begin creating your own Time Capsule films… I can inspire you through my course Creating Time Capsules… Registration is open for the course beginning Friday 31st Jan. All the details are here…

GIVE AWAY TIME – As I do on every course I run… I’d love to giveaway TWO places for this course… just leave a comment telling me your favourite part of your morning routine at the moment and I’ll announce the winner on Thurs 23rd Jan.

All the best. x.

Such a sweet video! I love all your stuff,,,it’s inspiring and can give me a “lift” at times..! Thanks! My morning routine doesn’t involve the little ones anymore as they’re all grown up and my furry friends aren’t with me anymore. I sure miss those mornings!! Just me and my new husband now 🙂 My favorite part of the morning, as of right now, is that first cup of hot coffee,,that first sip…ahhh,,,then I can start to think about the day !! Probably just as favorite is going out the back door to check out the sunrise and snap away if I feel the need to capture it!

Wow I totally adore this video, I’m new to your blog and devouring it on a regular basis. I loved how you captured your son putting his jumper on and the cold breath outside. Simply amazing.
My favourite part of my morning is hearing my sons first words in the morning as he calls for us.

My absolute favorite part of my morning routine is getting my kids up. It sets the tone for the day and it makes me so happy to see their smiling but still tired eyes.

Hi Xanthe, I have just stumbled across your site and I am in love with your work. My favourite part of my morning routine, is the newest addition to it! This year I chose a guiding word for the first time and part of honouring that means I now take five minutes to myself to sit in my hammock chair with a cup of tea and gather my thoughts for the day. Its so simple and yet pure bliss.

My favorite part of the morning is sitting with a cup of hot tea next to my three year old while he eats breakfast and talks and talks and talks my ear off.

My favorite part of the morning is when my kids best up and hug me. It never fails, as I’m moving through the morning routine, they stop me to reconnect with a hug. I love this.

Oh Xanthe, my favorite part of my morning routine is just that patch of time when everything is done and I head into the kitchen to prepare my French press coffee. That’s when my thoughts and focus change direction from doing to just being. Then, that first sip in the quiet. Ah yes.

Hi, Xanthe! I watched all three of them and they’re just wonderful! I’ve actually spent the past week digging my way through your archives, falling more and more in love with the idea of creating Time Capsules with every one of your films that I watched. What a beautiful way to preserve memories!

My favourite part of my morning routine has always been breakfast. When I still lived with my parents, we would all sit down together, eat our toast or cereals or porridge and talk about our plans for the day or read the paper, even on school days. And even though it’s only me now, it’s still the part of my mornings that I enjoy the most.

I love the film, seeing their different personalities. I need to capture more of my kids on video. It’s so special watching back years later.

My favourite part of my morning is sleepy snuggles with my youngest (she’s not a morning girl!) while my early bird chatters excitedly about his day ahead.

My favourite part of the morning routine is those first precious 30 seconds or so waiting the kettle to boil and contemplating the day ahead… before the craziness of the world creeps in.

    Beautiful work by the way.

My favourite part of my morning routine is that my coffee mug, steaming with fragrant dark coffee magically appears on the bathroom counter when I am in the shower (best husband for sure!). It makes me smile knowing that it is the little things that we do for each other that make us blissful together

I am not a big morning person, so I would say shower time. After that everything starts to fall into place.

I adore my kids, but I have to admit that my favorite part of my morning routine is my few minutes of quiet with a cup of coffee before everyone gets up.

My favorite part of my morning routine is the big smile my daughter gives me when I go to get her out of her cot. It melts my heart. You have just reminded me that I should film her as I go in one morning. I love your videos and would love to learn to create similar.

Hi Xanthe! My favorite part of my current routine these day is the pace- after years of rising way before the sun to rush out the door to teach elementary school, I now wake up whenever my adorable alarm clock (my two-year-old daughter) decides to, which is generally at a reasonable 8:30am. We putter and read and I sip coffee while she plays with her babydolls. I feel super blessed to be able to enjoy every slow delicious morning like this, especially because I know it’s short-lived- before long, we’ll be in the busier routine of schooldays and off to work again. In the meantime, I am loving these slow relaxing beginnings to our days!….Thanks for being such an inspiration to me with your beautiful projects and your lovely perspective on life- I especially love how you #lookforthelight…not always instinctual! Keep up your wonderful work!

My favorite part is waking up before everyone else, make a delicious coffee and light a incense on the porch. Drinking my coffee, quietly, while watching the first people out of their homes. And I still have a whole new day to plan. It’s really magical! ♥

Oh, I would so love to take this course! My morning routine starts with coffee, which really IS the best part of waking up. 🙂 Then I settle into journaling (morning pages), yoga and meditation, followed by a walk. It would be hard to pick which is my favorite part. I love my mornings.

My favorite part of our morning routine is drinking my first tea while sitting on the couch watching my 1.5 year old play. He’s so full of life first thing in the morning – it’s such a joy to watch and a reminder to embrace each day to the fullest from the very start <3

Sorry…I accidentally commented on the post above this one first.

My favourite part of our morning routine is braiding my daughters’ hair. I know they won’t need (want?) me to do it for much longer (sniff sniff).

Love these videos! It’s amazing how quickly you forget the small things. George used to come and shout cock-a-doodle-do at the foot of our bed every morning. Recently, he’s started every day by announcing the weather. Always up to something that makes the morning more fun. I really wish I’d video-ed some of those cockerel noises!! Would love to win a place xx
