14 Sep The Beauty of Noticing

One of the things I’d like to do now that I’m back here is gather up some of the projects I’ve been making and give them a proper home.
So, let’s start with The Beauty of Noticing.
This was a little video practice I began in June. I didn’t have a huge plan for it, I just wanted to make some daily videos and spend more time paying attention to the things around me and film a few of them as I went along.
Some days it was the light on the river or flowers moving in the breeze. Other days it was my matcha (it was mostly my matcha, if I’m honest!), a flash of colour or something that happened to look particularly lovely for a second.
Here are some of the videos I made.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of it. There was no voiceover to write and no story I needed to work out. I gathered a few clips, edited them chronologically, chose some music and let the moments sit together.
It felt more like a visual meditation and I noticed that the more I looked, the more there was to see. Funny that.
I made these every day throughout June and it turned out to be a great month to document.
I loved doing it, so I found myself returning to it on a few days in August (I didn’t want the daily commitment). I liked that I could dip in and out and I’m aiming for 50 videos by the end of the year – let’s see.
So many of my videos are about collecting memories for the future, but these brought me right into the present. I wasn’t thinking about how I would feel when I watched them years from now. I was noticing how I felt while I was making them.
Here’s a little more about what the project meant to me.
