FAQ – WHERE CAN I SHARE VIDEO ON INSTAGRAM?

FAQ – WHERE CAN I SHARE VIDEO ON INSTAGRAM?

Where can I share video on Instagram? There are so many choices of where to upload my videos now, which should I choose?

At the moment, Instagram gives us so many options of where to share our videos… it can be confusing. You can post your videos via Reels, Stories, IGTV or your Instagram grid. Where you share is likely to be dictated by which orientation you are shooting in and the aspect ratio and length of your video edit.

So here’s a quick guide to the aspect ratio, some of the features and length of video allowed for each setting. So you can pick the best place to upload your videos and stop motions.

Reels –

Video length – 3 – 30 seconds.

Vertical 9:16 only. Think about the frame and how the lower portion of the frame is slightly covered with text. Consider the loop – could your end frame flow back into your first frame?.

You can add music when uploading, if you have the feature available.

IGTV –

Video length – Over 60 seconds.

You can upload your video in horizontal 16:9 – when you rotate your phone, the video will show in full frame. Or vertical 9:16, although the 15 second preview in the grid is 4:5 crop, so ideally people need to click through to see the full 9:16.

You can upload with your own music or audio. Make sure you have permission to use the music online.

The video will auto play once. When playing in the full 9:16 crop, you have the ability to pause, rewind and forward with a scrub bar. Or double tap on the edge of the screen to jump forward/backwards 10 secs.

IG Stories –

Video length – 15 second segments.

9:16 vertical is the best option for Stories, as it fills the frame but you can upload in horizontal as well.

The videos auto play once and will disappear after 24 hours, unless you save them to a Stories Highlight. You can add music when uploading, if you have the feature available.

IG Grid –

Video length – 3 – 60 seconds.

You can upload your video in square 1:1, horizontal 16:9 or the vertical 9:16 which will be cropped to a 4:5, so be mindful that some of your frame will be cut off. Consider the loop – could your end frame flow back into your first frame?.

You can upload with your own music or audio. Make sure you have permission to use the music online.

So, it’s up to you!

I suggest having a play and trying both vertical and horizontal shooting. As they can both give you opportunities to experiment with composition and framing.

And try sharing your videos in different places – Reels is good if you want to shoot in vertical and add popular music, IGTV works for longer films and if you’ve shot in 4:5 with your own music… pop it into your grid.
