02 Jun 100 Days of Colour in Hoi An
One hundred days. Five hundred photos. And somehow it still feels like I’ve only scratched the surface.
Back in February, I started a project called 100 Days of Colour in Hoi An. The idea was simple – every day I would share five photographs that celebrated the incredible colours to be found here while living in Hoi An.
Now that the project has come to an end, one thing stands out more than anything else: the sheer number of photographs I took.
Yes, there are 500 images in the final collection, but those are just the ones that made the cut. Behind each of those photos are countless others. Moments noticed, compositions explored, colours discovered and images that almost made it.
In many ways, that was exactly what I hoped this project would do. It encouraged me to pick up my camera every day and get back into the habit of taking photographs.
What surprised me was how easy it became. Once the project found its rhythm, momentum carried it forward. Instead of feeling like something I had to do, it became part of my day.
The project gave me a reason to wander a little further, revisit familiar places and pay attention to things I might otherwise have missed. Some days it took me somewhere new. Other days it encouraged me to look at somewhere familiar with fresh eyes.
Of course, it also had me looking for colour everywhere, but that’s hardly a new theme for me. Colour has always been at the centre of my work, as it’s what catches my eye and brings me joy. Whether I’m taking photographs or making videos, I’m constantly drawn to colour, light and visual details.
Perhaps that’s why this project felt less like a challenge and more like a celebration of something I already loved.
Looking through all 500 photographs now, I’m reminded what an incredible place Hoi An is. Markets, flowers, walls, boats, lanterns, doorways, bikes, reflections, beaches and everyday street scenes all found their way into the project. And yet I still feel as though there are hundreds more photographs waiting to be taken.
To mark the end of the project, I’ve put together a slideshow featuring all 500 images. They move quickly across the screen, far too quickly to appreciate each photograph individually, but together they create a colourful snapshot of these past one hundred days.
