We’re back for a fourth winter! It’s my favourite way to start the year.
Hosted by myself and the brilliant Andrea Jenkins – a fellow lover of all things colourful. This simple project really is uplifting and brings a vibrant focus to what’s normally a tough time of year, but seems even more needed this year, with current world events.
It’s a colour prescription that works.
Taking part is simple… find & make colour happen.
Photograph colour // Make films containing colour // Wear colour // Play with colourful props // Go on colour hunts // Make bouquets of colourful flowers // Find colourful doors // Paint my nails // Look in my archives for colour.
This year we thought we’d mix it up little and do things a little differently….
Focusing on daily colours throughout February.
Monday – purple
Tuesday – yellow
Wednesday – blue
Thursday – red
Friday – green
Sat – pink
Sun – orange
I’ll be sharing my colours each day on Instagram using #colorcolourlovers… and here on my blog (probably weekly) and then both Andrea (@hulaseventy) & I will add photos to our shared collection (eventually) - It’s quite the rainbow! I love it.
Please feel free to join in with us – the more colour the better!
I love a photowalk or instameet – totally LOVE it!
A photo walk or instameet is group of creatives gathered together… walking… chatting and photographing the beauty around them, sharing tips and Instagram stories… and making fun photos with the people they’re with.
It can be such a good time… opening your eyes to new things to photograph, a chance to learn and see how other creative people work.
If you never been on a photo walk or instameet before…
HERE ARE MY TOP TIPS -
PREPARATION – Charge your batteries, gather your memory cards and make space on your phone. My iPhone is always bringing up the dreaded warning sign of “No more photos” – make room for plenty more photos!
Choose which camera/s you’re going to bring. Bring what you’re comfortable shooting on or a camera you’d like a chance to play with.
Check out the weather – Bring an umbrella if it’s raining or shades for a rare bit of sunshine! and dress appropriately. I think it’s fun to wear colourful outfits, especially if you are on a walk where you might be photographing each other. I always say shoes can be practical, but they’re much more fun, if they’re pretty!
It’s up to you but consider bringing water, snacks or even both. So your energy levels stay up.
DURING THE WALK – Play with shooting your surroundings in a variety of ways – looking up & down, get in close, shoot wide, even shoot along the ground. Be creative… Look for interesting light, shapes, textures, lines and colours. Shoot in abundance & play, this is chance to experiment! and see how other people shoot and approach photographing the same subject differently.
Think about hashtags you love and creating photos for them – some of my favourites are : #doortraits #caughtgramming #instagrammerdown #colorcolourlovers #thisislondon #jumpotd #strideby etc – there are SO many and you might learn some new ones from your new friends!
It’s likely that there will be photographers of all levels, shooting with all sorts of cameras. Don’t get caught up on comparing your skills or equipment. Ask questions about camera gear, photo apps and shooting preferences. Connecting, making new friends and conversation is a big part of the experience. Most people are willing to share what they know – I certainly try my best to share anything you’d like to know.
Be brave… if you have an idea for a certain shot – go for it. There’s nothing worse than going home wishing you’d tried that creative idea in your head. If you like photographing people, ask someone or a group of people to pose for you… if you see something round the corner away from the crowd – sneak off, shoot it and catch up with them after. If you’d like your photo taken, ask someone to snap it for you on your device. If inspiration strikes, embrace it!
But most of all – enjoy this time to play and be spontaneous and open your eyes to this amazing colourful world!
Fell in love with all the tiles of course…
More tales and photos of Marrakech to come… but I loved all these colours and textures, so they deserved a post all of their own.
I was shooting in the colourful Notting Hill recently and started thinking about all the colourful places I’d like to visit in the world.
A while ago myself and a couple of friends started a Pinterest board of colourful places we’d like to visit in the world.
A dream list of destinations… hoping it would act as a vision board, but alas not a lot of travel has happened lately.
SO I’m putting together my top five colourful places I’d like to visit, so hopefully I can begin crossing them off sometime soon.
In no particular order -
1. Havana, Cuba.
Every time I see a photo pop up of Havana in my IG feed, I get all heart eyes and instantly want to jump into the photo.
2. Burano, Venice, Italy.
I mean! Seriously! The streets look amazing. House after house painted in beautiful colours.
I’d head to Rajasthan first and then wander for a long time.
4. Marrakech, Morocco
Spice markets and ornate doorways…. yes please.
5. Amsterdam tulips fields…
I think I would faint if I ever saw these in real life. Flower sensory overload in the best possible way.
So that’s the top five for now… Now to get crossing them off!
Another great Colour Lovers Photowalk this morning!
This time exploring the Brick Lane area…
With lots of graffiti…
Colourful store fronts…
My favourite pink house on such a pretty street off Brick Lane…
And doors… of course.
A little rain at the beginning of the walk, didn’t stop us from seeking out colour to photograph…
We walked and chatted… all the way taking photos… and then finally, once the chilliness became too much, we found somewhere cosy to finally warm our hands, so we could take a look at what we’d shot.
Thanks to all the lovely ladies who joined me on this colour safari, especially considering how cold and drizzly it was!. It was fun!

Another winter blasted away with the simple task of finding colour.
It works. It truly does.
Each week a new colour and new opportunities to bask in technicolour.
I wear colour and have flowers in the house… spot colour in familiar places (like the doors above) and some ordinary ones. Take a photo, make a film… whatever I like. The freedom of the project is anything goes.
This year has been magic… there have been lots of other projects and work things happening that have taken my attention, but it’s so good to commit to this and find inspiration, generate new ideas and push myself to get out and shoot, when really I should be dealing with my inbox.
My favourite pieces of work to come out of this project… were the transition stop motions.
Last year I created colourful collections each week and I wanted something new for 2016, so the idea of saying good-bye to one colour and hello to another seemed fun, as I’ve previously done it with a photo. Especially if I could use totally random things and play with them.
I love this series! Hope you enjoyed them too.
And the final one… GOODBYE BLUE – LET’S CARRY ON CELEBRATING ALL THE COLOURS, ALL THE TIME!
Thanks to everyone who followed along and joined in.
Till next time, we will update our shared space soon, so all the colours can sit together beautifully.
Not sure when we’ll be back, there are whisperings of doing it again, perhaps even this year?… I’ll keep you posted.
BLUE is always a joy to finish the color//colour lovers project on.
Especially as this is often the week that the light shifts and the BLUE skies appear.
BLUE – you are hope that spring is on it’s way. Thank you.
Found the most darling street off the Kings Road, full of BLUE treats…
ORANGE – I love you
Especially when you glow…
Or appear at my feet…
Or make the kitchen smell amazing!
Orange you were fun – thank you!
So long ORANGE, it’s time for some BLUE playtime…
GREEN week was pretty quiet… I didn’t get out and about as much unfortunately…
But I still found a few pockets of GREEN here and there, but not as much as I would’ve liked.
So long GREEN… thanks for bringing a little calm. On to ORANGE now…
PINK is always sweet… Had to dip into the archives a little too much for my liking this week. Stuck at my desk and terrible weather…. meant I didn’t get out enough.
But still took some candy coloured pics to make me smile…
Every week there’s a door… kinda feels a bit like cheating, coz it’s easy to find lovely doors in London… but I love them and this one is local to me and brings me joy every time I see it.
Goodbye PINK… thanks for being so lovely. On to GREEN now… how many shades can we find?…
