As part of our Behind The Scenes course, I share a video tutorial of how to put yourself in front of the camera.
I thought I’d share it here for those taking part 12.12.12 incase they fancy a little chat to camera… and for anyone else wanting to video blog.
Videoing yourself is not for everyone, I know it scares me, but I’m also kinda drawn to it… weird? I do it for my courses and I also like to put myself (when I can) into my films, because I believe it’s important to be part of the story too.
Here are my top five tips for talking to camera, should you be a little curious to do it…
- Find good light and space you feel comfortable with no distractions - Talking to camera is uncomfortable situation for most people, but be brave and keep doing it, as only practice, practice, practice will help you get better.
- Look into the camera, it’s about making contact with your viewer. Imagine you’re talking to a friend.
- Have an idea of what you might say, either a list in your head to keep the conversation more casual and spontaneous or make bullet point notes, to put by the side of your camera, to prompt you while you’re talking.
- Remember to check what you’ve recorded, to make sure you’ve got it in the bag. And don’t worry if you ramble on, because you can always edit it down.
- Have fun, experiment and don’t take yourself too seriously… Be YOU… get all the silliness and embarrassment out of you, make noises, be silly and then take a deep breath and BE YOU.
The video tutorial goes over these points in my silly way… I recorded this a few months ago, and I’m really cringing inside now I’ve watched it back… but hey ho, if I can do it, so can you…
Oh gosh, it makes me miss my old kitchen!… If you’ve survived watching my nonsense… perhaps you’d like to view the even more silly out-takes here.
I’m happy to announce the lucky winner is Kath Stewart, yay! I’ll be in touch and we’ll get you all joined up.
Can I just say… the reaction to this giveaway has caused Kim & I to stop and think… and find a way to get more of you involved because as much as we’d love too, we can’t offer a free spot to everyone.
A huge part of the course is the community that forms within the class… SO we have a special offer. We’d love to offer anyone who signs up the chance to bring a friend for along for free. Yes, a 2 for 1 option will be open till Friday. What better to enjoy the class than with your best blogging friend.
All the details are here… once you’ve signed up, send us a quick email stating your friend’s name and email address… and we will get him/her all hooked up!.

Two chances of winning! Leave a comment here and over at Kim’s cafe, and we’ll pick a winner on Monday.
I’m taking a different twist with Fact Friday this week… Instead of it being a mixed bag of random things. I’m gonna share a few loves/facts/thoughts about this great city of ours because I’ve kinda fallen back in love with it, riding the wave of all this Olympic love.
1. I love London
2. I love travelling by bus, sitting on the top deck always noticing new things… it’s a window to a whole new world.
3. We love jumping. (You must have noticed this)
4. There is always some sort of street art to admire (or jump in front of)
5. Whilst Tower Bridge doesn’t have the same allure as Brooklyn Bridge… it’s still pretty impressive, even more so decorated with the Olympic rings.
Have a happy weekend. xo
How is it August already? I just don’t know where this year has gone, and now I feel the nights are drawing in already and we’ve only had a sprinkling of Summer… hey ho!
I’ve got a few announcements to make… maybe a drum roll? maybe not?
Behind The Scenes – a creative guide to blogging your passion opens for registration TODAY! I shared my thoughts about the course & a few of the testimonials last week with many more lovely things written here… if this a journey you’d like to take with Kim and I…we’d love to have you, join up here.
Remember I shared the exciting news of Tracey Clark’s new book Elevate The Everyday… well, all month long at Shutter sisters, we’re running a daily photo challenge looking for the details in everyday life. Come on over and join in the fun. There are more chances to win a copy of this book…
Also, Francesca and I have been blown away by how many people have got involved with It’s A List Thing, it’s a real joy to see you there sharing your lists… we have a couple of new lists ideas for August and some cute buttons to add to your blog.
My list from July – Things that make me feel grown up.
Lastly… just for you…
It’s been quite a journey for both of us… I’ve loved working with Kim and between us we’ve created some wonderful content that I’m really proud of. We’ve already seen how many of the participants have already grown their online presence and are truly flying on their own creative journeys. Since the class finished on Friday, the most heartfelt emails and comments have come our way, making me burst with gratitude.
I thought I’d share some of them here and let you know that the second round will be opening for registration next week. We’d love to have you on board…
Gitanjali said… Behind the scenes has been packed to the brim with so much goodness! Each post has me stimulated and gently urges me to think about endless possibilities that my blog can become. Each post empowers me to become the blogger of my dreams.
My very favorite part of this course has been the lovely, free flowing Skype conversations between Kim and Xanthe. I feel like they are my friends and that we are chatting over a cup of coffee. They are no longer artists that I admire from a distance. Rather they are warm human beings who are on the same journey as me. Together we explore new frontiers and create new landscapes.
For this, I will be ever grateful.
Robyn said… Thank you so much for a fun filled and great learning experience these past 4 weeks! I am so surprised at what I can do now on my blog, with photoshop and all the other wonderful websites you introduced us to! You’ve inspired me to try new ideas for my posts.
I’m sorry to see the class come to end. It’s like the feeling you get when you finish a good book and you feel like you are losing a good friend.
See you at the next class.
Barb said… Such an amazing class – inspirational and technical – killer combination!
Roxi said… Awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome, did I say awesome? Now I need to go back and really dive in to the parts I skimmed. I think you both went above and beyond the call of duty with all the great information you’ve shared. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!
Kristina said… Your course was perfect for boosting my creative energy and has me even more excited about my blog and the community I hope to create at Moms Who Click. I felt like I was in a blogging rut and this was exactly what I needed. You reminded me that I am exactly where I need to be and I realized that I’m actually in a great place (sometimes we forget that, right?).
Anyway, your ideas for content were terrific, your tutorials on creating various elements to spruce up your blog were easy to follow and helpful and the community that your course brought together was fantastic. I “met” so many wonderful, supportive bloggers through your course. Thank you for bringing us all together and for sharing your gifts.
This is the last week of the first round of Behind The Scenes… It’s been an incredible journey for Kim & I, we’ve poured our hearts into the content and shared all we can about our creative journeys online. The Behind The Scenes course gives load of inspiration, practical tips and tutorials for enhancing your online space and so much more. Registration for round two opens on August 1st… details here.
One of the missions today is asking everyone to answer 5 questions… little bits of information can give a real insight into who you are and what you like, helping you connect with more likeminded people or start a conversation.
We’re having a blog hopping linky party… and here’s my contribution.
1. What makes you happy?….. in 5 words or less….?
Family, sunshine, camping, creativity, sleep.
2. Which talent would you most like to have?
To be able to really sing… you know, not just kareoke.
3. Which words or phrases do you overuse most?
4. What is your favourite book & movie?
Book – (This is super tricky, but currently…) The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. I keep going back to it.
5. If you could go anywhere in the world for a creative retreat where might it be?
India & Mexico. I can’t wait to bask in all the colours and textures.
SO… now it’s your turn.
The friendship between Kim and I has certainly flourished since Shutter sisters camp because of Skype. It’s become an instant connection that’s important to both of us… so we had to transfer this element into the content for the new class, so we’ve been recording conversations sharing our behind the scenes inspiration.
We’re super excited to start next week… if you are interested, here are the details. So pop on over as the class is nearly full… registration is likely to close soon.
Exciting day today!
First, the new e-course I mentioned earlier this week is open for registration TODAY…
Behind the Scenes is a creative guide to blogging your passion with myself & the wonderful Kim, all the details can be found here. The course is going to take place in a new space called Reflection Of You, which we’re planning to build into a space full of creativity and connection… truly wonderful.
Please pop on over and take a look, we’re super excited.
Secondly, I’m over at Shutter sisters today launching our month of colour… I do hope you’ll join in? A month of searching for colour… YES PLEASE!
I’m in… what about you?
And then of course this weekend is full of celebrations of the Jubliee kind… we’re escaping all the pomp and ceremony to sit in a field in this beauty and hang out with friends, old & new. I’m sure there will be bunting, ’cause bunting always makes things happy.
Happy weekend to you all x.
